Ethics

You've probably seen it in a thousand movies, read it in hundreds of novels, but do you have an answer?

The question and (mini) discussion was started after Helal and I saw the movie "Saw II", it's kinda hard to know how we went from Saw to ethics but we made the jump.

And the question is, would you go beyond what's normally considered ethical to achieve a seemingly ethical/righteous/good goal? Were you a cop, would you plant evidence to get a conviction on a drug dealer? One that you know for sure (and actually) is a drug dealer. Would you steal your stolen car back from the thief who stole it provided that you can't get it through the lawful and ethical channels?
Would you vote to punish someone who did?

i think there is no moral absolutism in this life; instead we live via moral relativity that determines the righteousness of our deeds. We surely have principals and values that delineate our ultimate right and wrong, and these have always been crystal clear ever since we were little. Yet in many situations of life, like the examples you have given for instance, moral or ethical propositions do not reflect absolute and universal moral truths but instead are relative to social, cultural, historical or personal references, and that there is no single standard by which to assess an ethical proposition's truth. That’s real world and we have to agree about that.

Now the question “would i do it?” Well, i am absolutely not a Machiavellian whatsoever, but i do see many times that virtuousness of an act depends on the milieu of the act. If one could clearly see that his personal interests are not behind his actions, and that he has not only goodwill but also a justified reason (value or law) on the horizon, then there should not be a problem, i suppose.

well for me what’s taken by force is returned by force. Think about it if i took your car because i am more powerful than you would i give it back if u asked :p

For the drug think its a little bit different, how are r sure that he is a dealer and u cant prove it. Sometimes we say X is a thief and all the people know it but actually he might turn to be a nice guy and no body knows. He keeps his info to himself that’s it. So if u are dame sure that he is a thief you should see him stealing and when u do so you will have evidence and bust him. Otherwise its just speculations which might be right or wrong.
